So, to welcome the release of 0Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the author will provide an explanation of the timeline or historical period of the Assassin’s Creed series so far. This article was written so that you can understand briefly, concisely and clearly how the AC series storyline progresses based on year order.
Disclaimer: This article is based on a historical timeline of what happened in the Assassin’s Creed series, not based on the list of games released from start to finish. The explanation is made as simple as possible so that readers understand where the AC series timeline starts from to the most recent era of the series and focuses on the main game.
Timeline Assassin’s Creed Series
The following is the Assassin’s Creed series timeline to date. This is what you should know:
1. Ancient Greece (Peloponnesian War – 431 BC)
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a game series set in Ancient Greece. This game takes place during the Peloponnesian War era where Sparta and Athens fought to gain domination over Greek land. In this game players can choose to be one of two brothers: Alexios or Cassandra.
The story begins when the younger brother of the character we choose is about to be thrown off a cliff. This is because there is a prediction that he will be the cause of the fall of Sparta. When he wanted to save his younger sibling, the main character accidentally pushed the Spartan elder off a cliff, so that inevitably he and his younger sibling were thrown away by their father.
Luckily our main character survives and grows into a mercenary named Eagle Bearer. His fate changed when he was asked to kill a soldier named “Wolf of Sparta” who was none other than his own father.
From here the main character learns that he is not his biological father, his mother left Sparta, and his younger brother is still alive but under the control of the Templar predecessors called the “Cult of Cosmos.” At the same time, they are also the parties behind the scenes of this war.
Thanks to the help of friends he met, and historical figures such as Herodotus and Pythagoras, the main character was able to stop the Cult of Cosmos by seizing an artifact from Eden called the Staff of Hermes. Players can also determine the fate of the main character’s younger siblings and other family members throughout the choices they make.
2. Egypt (Ptolemaic Dynasty – 49 – 38 BC)
Ptolemaic Dynasty-era Egypt is the setting of Assassin’s Creed Origins . In this game, players will act as a Medjay, or special police unit, named Bayek from Siwa. He is a descendant of the main character in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey who migrated from Greece to ancient Egypt.
The story of Origins begins when Bayek and his son, Khemu, are kidnapped by a group of masked men who call themselves the Order of the Ancients. They force Bayek to open a secret door in a temple. Khemu tries to help his father escape, but he is accidentally killed by Bayek.
Meanwhile his wife Aya worked under Cleopatra, who attempted to overthrow the power of her brother, Ptolemy. Behind his younger brother’s power, it seems that the Order of the Ancients is working behind the scenes to control Egypt.
With the help of Julius Caesar, Cleopatra succeeded in overthrowing Ptolemy’s power. However, it is very unfortunate, when Caesar and Cleopatra were able to control Egypt and Rome, they instead collaborated with the Order of the Ancients. It was at this time that Bayek and Aya decided to build a rival order to the Order of the Ancients.
Bayek and Aya began recruiting people to fight the tyranny of the two leaders and called themselves the “Hidden Ones.” They worked behind the scenes to kill Julius Caesar and also the person responsible for the death of their son, Khemu.
3. Baghdad during the Abbasid Caliphate (861 AD)
Before he ventured to Europe, Basim ibn Ishaq was a thief in the 9th century city of Baghdad during the era of the Abbasid Caliphs, in Assassin’s Creed Mirage . In this game, it is also the forerunner of the “Assassin” order which will be built in the Alamut mountain area.
Young Basim seeks to join the Order of the Ancients. To prove himself to the order, he sneaks into the caliph’s palace with his friend Nehal. But they were caught red-handed by the caliph. To save Basim, Nehal kills the caliph and the two manage to escape from the palace.
To avenge the death of the caliph, the soldiers tried to eradicate all the thieves in Baghdad. Basim himself was saved by Roshan, who then trained him to become a member of the Hidden Ones. Basim and Roshan are then assigned to stop the influence of the Order of Ancients in Baghdad.
Basim is tasked with killing members of the Order of the Ancients, who have infiltrated the caliphate, exploiting their power to search for artifacts from the ancient Isu race. Basim also reunites with his old friend Nehal, who tells Basim to investigate this artifact without the help of the Hidden Ones.
Disobeying the orders of his mentor, Roshan, Basim goes to a secret temple under Alamut. There he confronts Roshan who realizes who Basim really is. They fight, but Basim manages to win. He and Nehal then investigate the secret temple.
In the temple, Basim finds out that he is the reincarnation of Isu from Asgard named Loki. He also realized that all this time Nehal was not real, but a fragment of Loki’s hidden memory. Basim also accepts the fact that he is the reincarnation of Loki and intends to look for other incarnations of Asgard.
4. Anglo-Saxon England in the Viking Era (873 – 885 AD)
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla for fans is the third title in the “Mythology Trilogy” of this franchise. Like the era in which the timeline is set, Valhalla displays Norse or Scandinavian mythology. So don’t be surprised if gods like Odin, Loki, Fenrir and Thor appear in this game.
In Valhalla players will play as Eivor, a viking who joins a large coalition army to invade and create a colony in Anglo-Saxon England with his adopted brother, Sigurd. He was also the one who introduced Eivor to the Hidden Ones members Basim and Hytam.
Eivor also helps Basim and Hytam to build a Hidden Ones branch in Saxon. In his journey to help the Hidden Ones eradicate the Order of the Ancients, Eivor also built alliances with neighboring kingdoms and other viking clans in Anglo-Saxon.
However, over time Eivor and Sigurd had strange visions about Asgard and Ragnarok. Basim then faced the two and revealed that they were the reincarnations of Loki (Basim), Odin (Eivor) and Tyr (Sigurd).
Basim then attacks Eivor to avenge him when he was still alive as Loki and had a conflict with Odin. Luckily, Eivor was able to defeat Loki and lock him up in a simulation machine belonging to the Isu race.
After Eivor resolved the old problems between Asgard, he joined his fellow vikings and succeeded in defeating King Alfred in battle. Alfred reveals that he is the leader of the Order of the Ancients. Before they parted ways, Alfred told Eivor that he would build a new order called the Templars.
5. Third Crusade (1191-1193 AD)
Before Assassin’s Creed went deeper into its mythology or science fiction elements, Ubisoft introduced the Assassin order through the adventures of Altair Ibn-La’Ahad in the Jerusalem area and its surroundings.
Here Altair was assigned by his mentor, Al-Mualim, to kill 9 Templar members in the midst of the conflict between Sultan Salahuddin al Ayubbi and King Richard the Lionheart.
In this mission, Altair realized that they were plotting to obtain a mysterious artifact called the Apple of Eden. From the ninth Templar member, Robert de Sable, Altair learned that his mentor was the tenth member of the Templars.
Thanks to the help of his fellow Assassins, Altair was able to stop Al-Mualim. Even though his mentor tried to use the Apple of Eden to eliminate all conflict in the world by curbing freedom, Altaïr decided to destroy the artifact.
However, instead of being destroyed, the Apple of Eden instead displays a world map showing the location of other artifacts. The fight over Eden’s artifacts is one of the causes of the eternal conflict between the Assassin and Templar orders.
6. Italy Renaissance Era (1476 – 1507 AD)
If Altaïr is the character who introduced us to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, then Assassin’s Creed II and Brotherhood introduced us to the most famous figure from this franchise: Ezio Auditore da Firenze.
Ezio Auditore is a charismatic but careless young man from Florence, Italy. His life changed when his father and all his brothers were accused of being executed by corrupt officials. To save his sister and mother, Ezio goes to the land of his ancestors.
There he met his uncle, Mario, who revealed that he and his father were members of the Assassins. Since then, Ezio joined the Assassin order to continue his father’s work.
Ezio’s journey in uncovering the Templar conspiracy in Italy took years. So in the end he discovered that the head of the Templars and the conspiracy of all his problems was Rodrigo Borgia, who would become Pope Alexander VI. He attempts to use the Apple and the Staff of Eden to rule the world.
Even though he managed to seize the Apple of Eden, Ezio did not finish off Borgia, so the Assassin’s base in his ancestral land was attacked by Rodrigo’s son, Cesare Borgia. This resulted in the death of his uncle Mario, and the weakening of the Assassin’s power.
Ezio then went to the Templar center in Rome, and attempted to rebuild the Assassin order that existed there for three years. With the help of new friends and the power of the resurrected Assassin order, Ezio manages to defeat Cesare Borgia.
7. Ottoman Empire or Ottoman Caliphate (1511-1512 AD)
Assassin’s Creed Revelations is the conclusion of the Ezio trilogy. In Revelations, Ezio, who is now starting to age, visits Istanbul or Constantinople during the Ottoman Dynasty. Revelations is also the one that connects Ezio’s story with Altaïr.
In Revelations Ezio, who has turned 52 years old, visits the former Assassin base in Masyaf to visit the secret library there. But unfortunately he found that Masyaf was surrounded by Templars and the library door was locked.
The key was hidden in Constantinople, or Istanbul after being controlled by the Ottoman Turkish Sultanate. In his efforts to find the key, Ezio was involved in an internal conflict, where there was a power struggle between Selim I and his brother Sehzade Ahmet.
In this conflict, Ezio discovered that Ahmet was the head of the Templars who was trying to overthrow the sultanate. However, thanks to the help of Ahmet’s nephew and Selim’s son, Suleiman (who would later be known as Suleiman Al Qanuni or The Magnificent), he succeeded in stopping the Templars’ movement there.
With the election of Selim as the new sultan, he then killed his own brother to prevent an ongoing civil war. Selim lets Ezio go, on Solomon’s advice.
Through the secret key found, Altair warned anyone who found it, not to be obsessed with seeking knowledge. Because it brings him suffering. Ezio, refusing to repeat the mistakes of his ancestors, left the Eden artifact with Altair and retired from the world of Assassins.
8. The Golden Age of Pirates (1715-1722 AD)
Maybe this is the first Assassin’s Creed title to deviate from Assassin elements (before Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla). This is because Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is one of the best pirate games ever (with Assassin’s Creed elements).
Edward Kenway is not someone who has an Assassin bloodline. He is a Welshman trying to make a living on an 18th century Caribbean island. He became an Assassin by “accident” when he assumed the identity of Duncan Walpole, an Assassin who defected to the Templars.
With his “new identity” as an Assassin, Edward attempted to exploit the conflict that occurred between Assassins and Templars in the golden age of Pirates, to search for the Sage. At the same time the British and Spanish colonial governments in the Caribbean attempted to destroy the pirates.
Unfortunately, his obsession with treasure and his failure to take advantage of the Assassin and Templar conflict, which resulted in the death of his fellow pirates, made Edward reflect on his way of thinking and lifestyle so far.
In the end, Edward decided to join the Assassin order to stop Templar activities in the Caribbean. After receiving news that his wife had died, he returned to England to care for his daughter and build the Assassin order there. Edward married a second time and had a son named Haytham.
9. War between the French and Native American Tribes (1752-1760 AD)
Assassin’s Creed Rogue is a unique series, because it is set after Black Flag, before and after AC III, and has ties to AC Unity. So Rogue itself can be said to be both a sequel and a prequel.
Shay Cormac is the newest member of the Assassins in the United States colonies. He is famous for his rebellious nature. He trained under the Master Assassin, Achilles Davenport, who asked him to collect an artifact called the “Precusor Box.”
Because Shay had experience as a sailor, he was sent to Portugal to secure the artifact. However, as soon as he retrieves the artifact, Shay accidentally activates the mechanism that created the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake.
Feeling guilty, Shay attempted to steal a map containing the location of another Precusor Box, but his fellow Assassins managed to corner him, shoot him and leave him for dead. Luckily, Shay was saved by a Templar named George Monro.
From Monro he learned that the Assassins had not given up looking for another Precusor Box. Shay eventually joined the Templar order, which was witnessed by the Grandmaster of the Templars in America: Haytham Kenway.
Slowly, Shay kills his former Assassin colleagues, leaving only Achilles and his former best friend, Liam O’Brien, remaining. Together with Haytham, Shay succeeded in thwarting the Assassin’s plan. Shay also convinces Haytham to release Achiless, but not before he shoots him in the leg.
For 16 years, Shay was tasked with searching for the Precusor Box, which had fallen into the hands of the Assassins. In 1776, Shay visited the Palace of Versailles in France, to assassinate Assassin Charles Dorian, father of Arno Dorian.
10. American Revolutionary War (1754-1783 AD)
Before Black Flag, gamers were first introduced to the Kenway family through the American Revolutionary War in the game Assassin’s Creed III . At first gamers will play as Haytham Kenway, the son of Edward Kenway, but throughout the game we will play as Haytham’s son: Connor Kenway (Ratonhnhaké:ton).
The beginning of the story of this game begins when Haytham Kenway searches for a temple in the British colonies in North America. There he met and had children with a Mohawk woman named Kaniehti:io. The story then turns to their child named Ratonhnhaké:ton.
Ratonhnhaké:ton’s life changed when his village was burned and his mother died. Here he finds out that his tribe is the guardian of the temple that Haytham was looking for. He then visited Achilles Davenport, and asked him to train him as an Assassin, to protect his tribe.
Several years later Ratonhnhaké:ton, who calls himself Connor, is drawn into the American Revolutionary War. Apart from protecting his tribe from the conflict, Connor intends to keep the Templar influence away from the revolution. After killing several Templar members, Connor finally meets his father.
Even though they are different, the two are sometimes forced to work together in a situation. Unfortunately, fate said otherwise, differences in choices and ideologies made father and son kill each other. In the end, Connor succeeded in killing Haytham, and tried to continue fighting for the fate of his tribe even though America had become independent.
11. French Revolution (1789 – 1794 AD)
Assassin’s Creed Unity is the first title in the Assassin’s Creed series not to be released for seventh generation consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360). Ironically, Unity is known for the problems it faces upon release such as bugs, glitches and other technical issues.
In this game you will play the role of Arno Dorian, after his father was killed by Shay Cormac, he was cared for by Francois de la Serre, Grand Master of the Templar order in France. Arno’s life changes when he finds out that his adoptive father was murdered and he is accused of being the murderer.
In prison he met Pierre Bellec, a member of the Assassins who knew his father. The two managed to escape, Bellec then invited Arno to become a member of the Assassins. He also reunited with his adopted sister and lover, Elise, but their relationship froze after the death of Elise’s father.
In an attempt to find the culprit behind De la Serre’s murder, Arno discovered that the perpetrator was Francois-Thomas Germain; excommunicated members of the Templar extremists. Arno then invited Elise, who was also a Templar member like her father, to make a truce and form a temporary alliance.
Even though the Assassin’s Grand Master in Paris agreed, Bellec saw this as a weakness in the Assassin’s body, and killed the Grand Master. Arno couldn’t help but have to kill his mentor.
Arno and Elise manage to corner Germain, who manages to retrieve the Sword of Eden artifact from a secret temple in Paris. Both of them managed to stop Germain, but unfortunately Elise was killed in this fight.
12. Second Industrial Revolution (1868 AD)
Queen Victoria’s London is an interesting Assassin’s Creed series timeline. The reason is that in this era many famous figures appeared who influenced our world today. Just mention figures such as Alexander Graham Bell, Charles Darwin, and Karl Marx.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is the first game where players can switch between protagonists at will. The reason is that you will play as twin sisters, Evie and Jacob Frye. Both also have their own abilities and missions.
Arriving in London, the Frye brothers realized that London was controlled by Crawford Starrick. Apart from being a Templar figure, Starrick was a powerful figure in the world of London’s industrial and criminal underground. The two then decide to create a rival gang called “The Rooks.”
Despite this, both Jacob and Evie chose different paths: Jacob sought to reduce Starrick’s influence within the London community, by killing his fellow Templars. Evie herself is trying to find clues to the Eden artifact, one of which is that she has to visit Edward Kenway’s house.
With his members dead, Starrick decides to find the Eden artifact himself, while planning to kill all the heads of state in England. Jacob and Evie try to forget their differences and work together one last time to stop Starrick.
Thanks to the help of fellow Assassin member, Henry Greene, the two managed to infiltrate a party held at Buckingham Palace and ultimately managed to stop Starrick. For their services in stopping Starrick, Queen Victoria awarded both of them with the title of Knighthood.
That’s the timeline of the Assassin’s Creed series so far. Which one from the list above is your favorite?
