Game Networks – At the Microsoft Xbox Games Showcase streaming event, October 9 2024, it was revealed that Doom: The Dark Ages , is a new breakthrough from Id Software that will take the excitement of FPS games to a new level with a medieval feel.
Doom: The Dark Ages is an interesting spin-off from the Doom franchise , taking the Doom Slayer back in time.
The plan is that this game will be available in 2025 for Xbox Series X (and will be immediately available on Xbox Game Pass on launch day), PlayStation 5, and PC.
Previously, rumors of a new Doom game had been circulating in 2023 on social media, originating from a leaked Microsoft document known as Doom: Year Zero .
However, its official announcement at the Microsoft Xbox Games Showcase marks the first time that Id Software and Microsoft have publicly revealed their new project, following the reveal of the “IDKFA” trademark last month.
It is the latest entry in Id Software’s long-running FPS game franchise, following the success of Doom Eternal in 2020 as well as its two DLC expansions, The Ancient Gods Part One and Part Two , which were released in 2020 and 2021.
Doom Eternal itself was a huge success, with digital sales reaching three million copies in its first month of release, according to data from Superdata. This figure is three times the first month sales of the previous Doom game , which was released in 2016.
Trailer preview that provides a new look for the Doom Slayer, and unique new weaponry
In the trailer for Doom: The Dark Ages , the Doom Slayer is seen wearing his classic green armor, equipped with a cloak of animal fur and spikes sticking out of his shoulder armor, like the dashing attire of the Barbarians.
With his classic rifle, the sawed-off shotgun , which is his mainstay, he is ready to destroy the demons. However, this time, he comes with new equipment: a shield with rotating blades similar to a chainsaw.
In an epic scene, the Doom Slayer is even seen throwing the shield like Captain America. The shield also acts as a bullet barrier when he moves, giving him the opportunity to focus on defense while blocking enemy attacks.
This trailer also shows various other weapons, such as a Railgun that uses crushed skulls as ammunition, a plasma cannon, and a thrilling chain whip.
Not only that, Doom Slayer can even ride a dragon in some trailer scenes , adding a stunning touch of fantasy to the game.
The latest move from Microsoft to release its games to the PlayStation platform
One of the interesting things about this game is that, not only is it exclusive to Microsoft’s Xbox platform, but they also announced that it will be coming to PlayStation.
Microsoft bought Bethesda in 2020 and now owns the game studio Id Software, the developer behind the Doom series . However, Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal were multi-platform games before Id Software was acquired as part of Bethesda, and Microsoft appears to have remained consistent with its previous releases in the series.
Microsoft has previously brought four of its exclusive games, namely Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, Pentiment, and Sea of Thieves, to rival platforms such as PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
Several other Xbox games are also reportedly being considered for inclusion on other platforms, including Starfield, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Senua’s Sacrifice: Hellblade II .
